“Good Bones”

When someone is looking at an old house that they are thinking about remodeling, they will sometimes say, “Well it doesn’t look like much now, but it has good bones.” Not being an expert at home renovation, I understand that phrase to mean that the foundation and basic structure is sound. If the foundation is bad or the walls are rotten or full of termites, more thorough renovation will be needed. I’ve walked through several homes that people have been remodeling that required ripping everything out but the framing. It’s a messy business. Over the centuries, Christianity has been painted, wall-papered and redecorated by denominations and culture. Sometimes the decorations haven’t been appropriate to the intent of the building. Reconstruction needs to be preceded by deconstruction. It can be a scary and messy business. The political and cultural landscape of the past 20 years created an environment for religious deconstruction and if you are not involved in it yourself, you are close to someone who is. The good news is that the old house has good bones. If we rip the Christian faith back to the walls and framing, we don’t find rotten walls and a crumbling foundation. We find the Rock; crucified, risen and offering life. The bedrock of the Christian faith is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. As we celebrate Him this weekend, pray that all who are seeking will find that He is the Source and Satisfaction of the their longing.
