Pastor Fenelon wrote, “Your motives are not entirely pure in wanting to see people perfected for God’s glory; people’s faults bother you because you are too fussy and hard to please.” Ouch. The truth hurts sometimes. Fenelon is right though, isn’t he?! We want people to deal with their imperfections because they bug us. Husbands want wives to get sanctified, and wives want husbands to get sanctified, and parents want their kids to get sanctified. Why? For God’s glory or because they are so annoying? And, what does our lack of long-suffering reveal about our own immaturity. Is it possible that the more we grow in Christ the less annoyed we’ll be with the imperfections of others? And what of our motives? Is it the “weight of glory” that drives our desire for the sanctification of others or our own convenience? Of course, it is possible that you are not overly concerned about others, maybe it is your own sanctification that is moving too slowly. There is good news for all, Jesus Christ came to perfect us! Receiving His forgiveness and the Holy Spirit is the first step toward becoming who He designed us to be. Cooperation with His sanctifying work will move us (and others) further along in the process. He is hope and life for all who believe.
