“That Was Close!”

Have you ever had a close call with death? Tree stands, highways, working with electricity and climbing ladders are just a few of the places that life can be a little precarious. According to our text for Sunday, Saul had a close call with death in the bathroom. He and David were in the same restroom, but Saul didn’t know it. The only thing that saved Saul’s life was the sensitive conscience of David. David’s heart had been trained by slow and thoughtful prayer. It may have been slightly tempting, but deep down, David had decided that whatever happened to Saul would have to be the Lord’s doing and not his. David had respect for Saul’s office and love for him as a person. Respect and love like that is not natural but it is possible when we spend time reflecting on the love of God, the nature of humanity and the potential for those who are His. David is not the only Bible character with a heart like that. There are many in both the Old Testament and New. In fact, we can have a heart like that, but it will take some long, slow thinking and long, slow praying so that when we are tempted, we’ll know what to do. We can’t anticipate every situation but with God’s help, we can set our hearts toward Him and His ways.
