“What’s Your Giant Today?”

Charles Spurgeon wrote that the easiest giant David ever killed was Goliath. Before Goliath there was not only a lion and a bear. David had been sent to care for sheep…and made the most of it. David had been ignored by his own father when Samuel had asked for Jesse’s sons. Not only was he overlooked by his father, he was also despised by his brothers. He was accused of wrong motives. People tried to discourage him from doing what was right. A bully made fun of David and poured out cursing upon him. The sling and the stone was the easy part! Overcoming all the slights and contempt to get to that moment was the hard part. Those were giants too. Maybe that is one reason we have 48 verses of “build-up” to one verse of victory. The real battle started when David was first sent to the fields to care for the sheep. Every day has giants. What’s your giant today? What are you facing that makes you want to run for cover? Is someone treating you poorly? Are you experiencing contempt? Is someone accusing you of ill-motives? Does your family think you are good-for-nothing? Do your superiors doubt you? Does it feel like you are alone in doing right? The solution for all giants is the same. Repent, the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. It may require some means to move through this. Sometimes we are supposed to wait; sometimes we are supposed to sling a stone. If God wants you to act, what are you waiting for?
