“How Did We Miss That?”

Have you ever asked that question? Once you saw “it” you couldn’t believe you didn’t see “it” before. I drive to the church building many times each week and once in a while I’ll say to somebody, “How long has that _______ been there?” They will respond, “Oh, for a couple of years.” Then I will say, “How did I miss that?” There are several wonderful doctrines that are often overlooked and one of them falls in the shadow of Easter. We get past the Easter Egg hunts and the new clothes and the big day at church and we forget about the event that culminates the exaltation of Jesus—His Ascension to the right hand of God’s throne. Some churches honor that day on their church calendar, this year it will be May 29. Forty days after Easter, the Ascension of Jesus to Heaven is remembered and He is worshipped and celebrated for His victories return to the Father’s throne. The benefits of His Ascension are many! In fact, there are over 30 references to His place in Heaven and the benefits to us as His people. There are probably numerous reasons that the Ascension is not recognized more often but the truth is, if it were not for the Ascension, we would not be meeting as a church. It’s that important. As we gather for the Communion Service this week, we’ll take a look at a few of the blessings the Ascension has made possible and hopefully it will result in grateful worship of the Risen AND Ascended AND Seated King.
