"He Did What?!?"

Sometimes we say this when someone we know does something that seems a little crazy or maybe even out of character. I have a brother that has run a couple of marathons, I won’t be surprised if he runs another one. However, if the other brother ran a distance race, I would definitely say, “He did what?!?” Jesus walked on water, calmed storms, healed the sick and raised the dead back to life. He is God in flesh so we shouldn’t be too surprised by what He can do but the text we’re planning to study for Palm Sunday often leaves people scratching their heads and saying, “He did what?!?” Jesus was walking to Jerusalem on the Monday after Palm Sunday and He was hungry. “Oh the humanity of Jesus!” He saw a fig tree with leaves and decided to have a snack. The problem was, there were leaves but no figs. So instead of merely walking away, He “cursed” the tree and said, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” Wowsers, that seems harsh for the meek and lowly Jesus. Every other miracle of Jesus was in some way helpful or constructive. Even the dead pigs floating in the Sea of Galilee remind us that a man who had been in bondage was freed from Satan. This unique miracle should make us wonder why. The answer is not far away. In the gospel of Mark, the fig tree story is the top and bottom slice of a sandwich. The story in the middle is the so called “cleansing of the Temple.” We could actually call it the “termination of the Temple.” If we understand what He did in the Temple, the meaning of the fig tree story is clear. When God gives something life and raises it up, He expects it to fulfill its purpose.
